Ball State’s Writing Program is pleased to announce our 2020 Writing Contest. Projects composed for any Writing Program course (ENG 101, 102, 103, 104, or 114) during spring 2020, summer 2020, or fall 2020, including multimodal works, are eligible for submission. Winning compositions may be published in future editions of the Writing Program handbook BallPoint. The First Place winner will also receive a $100 award and the Second Place winner will receive a $75 award.

Submissions will be judged in two categories: 1) ENG 101/102/103 and 2) ENG 104/114, based on the overall quality of writing, reflection of Writing Program course goals, effective response to assignment prompt, and appropriateness for publication in BallPoint. We are especially looking for rhetorical analysis essays, literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, multimodal projects and collaboratively written assignments.

The deadline for submission for The deadline for submissions are:
Spring 2019 projects: Friday, May 1, 2020
Summer 2019 projects: Friday, July 17, 2020
Fall 2019 projects: Friday, December 18, 2020

The following components make up a completed submission and should be submitted as separate documents:

  1. Completed entry form (see Qualtrics Submission form link below or at the end of this page). Note: if you intend to submit a group project, all authors’ information must be included.
  2. A PDF copy of your project (if text-based) or a PDF containing your stable URL/file (if multimodal)* with all identifying information removed from the draft (this includes your name and instructor’s name).
  3. The assignment prompt (also as a PDF)*

* Submissions that are sent in unreadable formats may be disqualified from the competition.

Only one entry from each contestant per course will be considered! (However, you may submit one project from a 101, 102, or 103 course, and one project from a 104 or 114 course.) Questions can be directed to bsuwp@bsu.edu. Winners will be announced in spring 2021. We look forward to seeing your work!

Contest Rules and Regulations

  • Submitted work must have been composed for Ball State Writing Program courses—ENG 101, 102, 103, 104, or 114 in Spring/Summer/Fall 2020.
  • Contestants must have been enrolled in a Writing Program course in Spring/Summer/Fall 2020.
  • Essays can be from any genre or style; we are looking for a range of work, including but not limited to digital and multimodal submissions.
  • Each essay must reflect the contestant’s own research, writing, and original thinking.
  • Essays may be edited prior to publication in BallPoint.
  • Each contestant is allowed to enter only one submission per Writing Program course.
  • Each contestant must complete and attach an Entry Form (see Qualtrics Contest Submission Form below).
  • Essays written for a course in spring 2020 must be submitted by May 1, 2020 to be eligible for consideration. Essays written for a course in summer 2020 must be submitted by July 17, 2020 to be eligible for consideration. Essays written for a course in fall 2020 must be submitted by December 18, 2020 to be eligible for consideration.
  • Once submitted, essays become the property of the Writing Program and can be used for publication and distribution as the Writing Program sees fit.
  • Essays should be submitted by Qualtrics in the link provided (see below).
  • Questions should be directed to bsuwp@bsu.edu.
